Regime Change Row Response: कांग्रेस के वरिष्ठ नेता और तिरुवंतपुरम सांसद शशि थरूर ने कहा कि लोकतंत्र किसी की दी हुई भेंट नहीं है. भारत के आम नागरिक ही इसके संरक्षक हैं. हर भारतीय नागरिक को अपने लोकतंत्र की रक्षा करने का अधिकार है. शशि थरूर ने यह बयान दिल्ली में हुए प्रदर्शन के दौरान रिजीम चेंज और बांग्लादेश के जिक्र के बाद दिया. क्योंकि भाजपा इसे बड़े साजिश का हिस्सा बता रही थी. शशि थरूर ने स्पष्ट कहा कि भारत न तो बांग्लादेश है औ न ही फ्रांस. इनसे तुलना करना भी ठीक नहीं है.
शशि थरूर ने कहा “लोकतंत्र किसी की दी हुई भेंट नहीं है. भारत के आम नागरिक ही इसके संरक्षक हैं. हर भारतीय नागरिक को अपने लोकतंत्र की रक्षा करने का अधिकार है. मैं बस इतना कह रहा हूं कि हम चुनाव आयोग जैसी संस्थाओं से यह अपेक्षा करते हैं कि वे अपनी जिम्मेदारी समझें और भारत के लोकतांत्रिक संविधान के अनुसार काम करें. बस इतनी सी बात है. मैं इन संस्थाओं को चुनौती नहीं दे रहा हूं, बल्कि उनके काम करने के तरीके और उनके आचरण पर सवाल उठा रहा हूं. सच कहूं तो, भारत में हम सभी को इस बात को लेकर चिंतित होना चाहिए.”

It’s not an issue of trying to topple a regime or anything like that…" He adds, "…Democracy is not a gift of anybody… we, the ordinary citizens of India, are the custodians of it… Every Indian citizen has the right to protect our democracy… All I’m saying is we are asking institutions like the Election Commission to behave themselves, to perform as they are required to by the democratic Constitution of India. That’s all it is. I’m not in any way challenging these institutions as institutions. I’m challenging the way they are behaving, the way they are conducting themselves, and that is something that honestly all of us in India should be concerned about…"

फ्रांस की हिंसा का समर्थन नहीं
केंद्रीय मंत्री किरेन रिजिजू के बयान पर शशि थरूर ने कहा कि फ्रांस में जो हिंसा हुई है. हम उस हिंसा का बिल्कुल भी समर्थन नहीं करते हैं. मुझे नहीं लगता कि भारत की तुलना बांग्लादेश या फ्रांस से की जा सकती है. मुझे ये तुलनाएं प्रासंगिक नहीं लगतीं. हम केवल शांतिपूर्ण विरोध में विश्वास रखते हैं.

‘सत्ता परिवर्तन’ जैसे शब्दों को तोड़-मरोड़ कर पेश
उन्होंने आगे कहा कि मैंने भी ऐसे ही विरोध प्रदर्शनों में हिस्सा लिया है, और मुझे लगता है कि विपक्ष भी आमतौर पर इसी तरह के विरोध का समर्थन करता है. जहां तक बड़े मुद्दों की बात है, तो ‘सत्ता परिवर्तन’ (regime change) जैसे शब्दों को तोड़-मरोड़ कर पेश करने का कोई मतलब नहीं है. हम तो बस स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष चुनाव की मांग कर रहे हैं. मतदाता सूची की प्रक्रिया को रद्द करने की मांग यह एक संवैधानिक मुद्दा है. इसका मकसद किसी सरकार को गिराना या ऐसा कुछ करना नहीं है.
